Great job on the quiz!

Answering your questions about volunteering.
The five Ws and an H of volunteering with TLC.

Who - TLC students are adults (over 18) with limited reading skills. Generally, our students read at less than a 6th grade reading level.

What - Free one-to-one literacy lessons are provided through trained volunteers. Learner-centered instruction focuses on basic reading and writing skills with an emphasis on application and self-identified goals.

When - The time and frequency of lessons is determined by mutual consent between tutor and student.

Where - The tutoring location must be a public building with private space for tutoring. Tutoring is never held in the home (either student's or tutor's). Public libraries, community centers, churches, and workplaces are examples of typical tutoring sites. TLC staff can recommend locations.

Why - Your motivation for volunteering is important and personal. You will be asked to share your motivation at the training workshop. Universally TLC volunteer tutors care about improving the quality of life for nonreaders in our community.

How - You will learn all about the "how" at the pre-service tutor training workshop. Trainers will provide detailed guidance about instructional materials, sensitivity to nonreaders, and lesson planning. You will also learn about the expectation of volunteer service and the support system available to you as a TLC volunteer.
