Job Description of Basic Literacy Tutor
Purpose
To help adults 18 years or older use reading
and writing skills to meet self-identified goals

Responsibilities
Encourage and support learners
Keep records of learner's progress
Complete quarterly progress reports
Notify Tidewater Literacy Council of any
permanent changes in schedule or tutoring locations

Place of Tutoring
One-to-One tutoring in a neutral place such as a library,
community center, church or work site

Hours
Once or twice weekly meetings with learners for 1 to 1 1/2 hours each time
One to two hours per week preparing for lessons

Required Training
Tutor Training Workshops are held approximately
every six weeks throughout the year
Completion of a basic literacy tutor training session
and the desire to help an adult learn to read.
Tutors learn how to use the Laubach Way To Reading
books and how to work with adult students

Volunteer Qualifications
Be dependable, prompt and willing
to maintain the confidentiality of the lessons
Be able to relate well to a variety of people
Have good reading and writing skills
Be flexible, friendly, patient and optimistic
Be sensitive to the special needs of adult learners
